Lightfall Awards Finalist

Art Music Awards 2011Lightfall for Horn and Orchestra is a finalist as Orchestral Work of the Year in the Australian Art Music Awards 2011. These awards cover the years of 2009 and 2010. A list of all the finalists can be found here. The awards night is on 3 May 2011 at the Sydney Theatre.

A Quick Look Around

CG has completed a new work for large chamber ensemble entitled A Quick Look Around. At just under four minutes in length it is a reworking of his piece for bass trombone and piano A Short Life. Instrumentation is wind quintet, string quintet and piano. The full score and parts will be available from the Australian Music Centre in the near future.

Peace On Earth

Gondwana Choirs commissioned CG to arrange a new version of his popular choral work Peace On Earth for their 21st anniversary concert at the Sydney Opera House on 4 July 2010. This new arrangement reduces the orchestra to an ensemble of 2 pianos, 2-3 percussion and strings (minimum 2.2.2.2.1) and is suitable for both the original treble voices version and the SATB version. The full score and parts will be available from the Australian Music Centre in the near future.

A Short Life

CG has completed a new and possibly humorous work for Bass Trombone and Piano entitled A Short Life. Written at the request of UK bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton it is just under four minutes in length. Sheet music can be purchased through the Australian Music Centre.

Onward and Upwards

img_0121CG has completed Onward and Upwards, a ten minute piece for children’s choir, adult choir, piano and percussion. Its first performance is 23 January 2010 at the Verbruggen Hall, Sydney, by Gondwana Choirs and Synergy Percussion conducted by Lyn Williams.

Lightfall Premiere 09/09/09

sso0033Lightfall for Horn and Orchestra was premiered this evening by the Sydney Symphony at the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House, with Robert Johnson, soloist, and Richard Gill conducting. Two further performances will be given over the next two days.

CG has kept an extensive blow-by-blow blog about the composition and preparation of the concerto at www.hornconcerto.net. A webcast of the premiere can be viewed and pdfs of the full score and the solo part are available for download.

Will There Really Be a ‘Morning’?

CG has just completed a setting of the Emily Dickinson poem, Will There Really Be a “Morning’? for mixed choir and piano. It was written for the Australian Boys Choir to commemorate their 70th anniversary and will be premiered by the ABC and the Vocal Consort at the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne on 23 August 2009.
